Weather in Vietnam can vary wildly from region to region, from snow in the north to over 100-degree temps in the south. Generally, there are two monsoon seasons, between October and March in the northeast and between April and October everywhere but the mountains. Most Vietnam travel guides recommend visiting in April, May or October, or November to February if you will just be in the south.

When to visit Sapa?
A top the mountains of Northern Vietnam, Sapa’s weather is seasonal with highs of 29°C (84°F) during the summer and drops to freezing in the winter. Humidity levels vary from 75% to 90%, but the months of summer, July and August, experience the most rain. The most ideal time to visit the country is in March and April for dry and warm climate or in October and November for clearer skies and cooler days.
When to visit Hanoi?
The summer months in Hanoi occur in May to September and brings with it humidity and heat, with an average temperature of 32°C (90°F) and short bursts of heavy rains. These bursts of rain normally occur in the afternoon, and despite the occasional downpour, the summer months have the most sunshine. The cooler months bring clouds and fog but little rain, with an average temperature of 17°C (62°F). The most ideal time to visit Hanoi is in the months of October and November, because days are not too hot with temperatures of approximately 21°C (70°F), with spots of rain and hours of sunshine.
When to visit Halong Bay?
Ha Long Bay is often blanketed by mist, which reduces visibility but adds to its mystique. The months of March to May, Ha Long Bay’s skies are normally blue and clear with pleasant temperatures. In the summer months of May to November, expect days to be humid and warmer, with cool afternoon rains. The winter months of December to February are cool. The most ideal time to visit Ha Long Bay is in autumn or spring where there are more clear skies and warm days, ideal for cruising.
When to take a beach vacation in Vietnam?
If you plan on visiting Vietnam for its pristine beaches, deciding when to go will depend on the beach you want to go to. There are plenty of pristine beaches along the coast of Central to Southern Vietnam.
The central coast along Hoi An and Da Nang is warm throughout the year, with temperatures at a high of 38°C (100°F) during the peak of summer, in July and August, and approximately 24°C (75°F) during the colder months of winter. The dry season is in February till July. The best time to visit the beaches in this region is at the beginning of summer for milder temperatures or towards the end if you prefer hotter temperatures. Rainfall increases and water levels rise during the months of August to November. Typhoons come and go during this season.
The beaches in the south offer warm temperatures throughout the year with peaks of approximately 30°C (86°F). Nha Trang experiences monsoon rains in September to January, when typhoons come they carry heavy downpours and long rainy days. Mui Ne and Phu Quoc experience rainy season in June to September. Mui Ne experiences less rain, but expect light showers in the afternoon. Con Dao is humid and hot throughout the year, with rainy season starting in May till November. Con Dao experiences brief afternoon showers. The months of July to September experience heavy rains at night.
When to visit Hue?
Hue is situated in close proximity to Hoi An in Central Vietnam. Hue experiences its wet season in September to December, with brief but heavy downpours in the months of October and November which can lead to floods. Dry season occurs in the months of January to August, but afternoon rains are still a common occurrence, with temperatures reaching the mid-30s during summer.
When to visit Central Highlands (Dalat)?
Atop the mountains of Central Vietnam, Da Lat provides visitors with pleasant temperatures throughout the year which only change by a few degrees each month. The temperature hovers around 16°C (61°F) with a high of 24°C (75°F). Green season begins in May till November these months bring heavy rainfall but brings out the lushness and color of the countryside.
When to visit Saigon?
With close proximity to the equator, Saigon faces a consistently warm temperature throughout the year, with some days reaching an average of 28°C (82°F). The climate in Saigon is like any other Southeast Asian city that experiences dry and wet season. The months of May to November bring brief downpours in the afternoon. Travel is rarely disrupted during wet season and the countryside is lusher and greener in this season.

The most ideal time to visit Vietnam is in autumn and spring, if you want to experience the whole country. The temperatures in these seasons are moderate with lighter rainfall. During spring time, March and April have the lowest amount of rainfall in all of the destinations in the country, and average temperatures are pleasant across the board. The time between the months of November to April is peak season for travelers, accommodations, and travel agencies that is why bookings must be done months before.
Tet is a popular Vietnamese New Year celebration and occurs in late January or early February. At this time, most Vietnamese go on holiday, which leads to full bookings and an increase in the prices of accommodations and transport.
